Why I Celebrate Christmas

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." (Col.3:17)

This post is not to bash anyone or their beliefs about Christmas. My purpose is to explain why I celebrate Christmas and why I've come to that belief.

In Romans 14:5-6a we read, "One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord." These verses showed me that one person may observe Christmas (or any other day for that matter) and his conscience would not bother him. A totally different person may not be able to celebrate Christmas because of some of its pagan origins. However, Romans 12 goes on to say that we should no longer pass judgement on each other. The person who doesn't celebrate Christmas shouldn't judge the person who do celebrate that holiday. The same goes for the person who does observe Christmas. The key thing however, is that we celebrate the day for the Lord.

One of the main arguments against Christmas is that its roots are pagan. That is true of something surrounding Christmas. This issue I believe is like eating meat offered to idols. If your conscience bothers you, don't do it. If you feel free to partake, do so. If it stumbles a brother or sister, don't do it in front of them.

If you use the argument that a Christian should not celebrate Christmas because of some of the pagan origins, you should be consistent. The wedding ring has pagan origins. So do the name of the days of the week (i.e. Thursday = Thor's Day). There are many things in this world with pagan origins, will you try and remove yourself from all of them?

In closing, I'd like to encourage everyone to consider why they celebrate Christmas. Is it for the Lord? Is your conscience totally clear with Him on this issue? Ask Jesus to guide you through His Word and I believe you'll come to a place of clarity.
